What Causes Excess Flatulence And Heavy Chest Pressure After Eating?

I have a lot of flatuence after eating and during the day and passing wind. Some nights I can t sleep with a feeling of heavy pressure mid chest area between breasts, and relieved if I sit up for a while after taking a quick ease tablet or baking soda a glass of water. I have had osoophagul reflux for a number of years which I have kept under control by watching what I eat. I had my heart checked out 3months ago and the results showed no problems. I cannot eat fried foods cakes pies etc without having pain and heartburn so I avoid these things most of the time.

Hi,

All the history is suggestive of one or combination of the following:
Since you are a known case of the diagnosis you have mentioned, you must have taken treatment and as said correctly you know what not to eat or drink. I would add on few more things:
* Take small feeds distributed over 4 - 5 times a day so that the stomach is filled.
* Take antacids when on empty stomach.
* Eat and drink very slowing as this alone can avoid the commonest cause of flatulence and that is aerophagia which occurs while swallowing ans is most related to stress and anxiety.
* Get control over stress and/or anxiety and your problems may get over.
* Get the stool tests done and if there is any evidence of infection or infestation then get treated specifically as per the cause found.
* Upper GI endoscopy may show some positive findings and get treated as found.
* Also get an Ultrasonography to see if the gallbladder is normal or not. If there is any chronic infection or stone then you may need surgery to get the gall bladder removed.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
