What Causes Excess Mucus Discharge From The Throat?

i was told I had some gum problems, which have improved. Then I experienced a condition called "black hairy tongue" for the first time, which improved with medication. However, the top of my mouth and back of my throat feel raw. I moved back to the Midwest after spending four years in Connecticut and have had excess drainage and mucus in my throat. I'm not sure what to think.

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

Gum infection and black hairy tongue both can cause excessive salivation that can in- turn cause excess mucous in throat..

Other causes of excess mucous in throat can be post nasal drip due to sinus infection or sinusitis, acid reflux, respiratory infection etc..

So my suggestion is to consult an Emergency room and get evaluated so that the exact cause of the problem can be ruled out..
Treating the underlying cause can help in improvement..

For now you can take cough expectorants like Gueifenesin..
Do warm saline gargles and steam inhalations..

Hope this helps..

Regards..
