Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, I am asking this question on behalf of my mother who is 72 years of age. She has no other health issues of any significance. Her heart (as confirmed in an Angio) is good, no diabetes, her BP is normal. She has been told after an endoscopy that her food pipe is narrowing. She starts burping heavily after a meal and this continues for a while. She has been advised to eat slowly and has been prescribed some acid suppressors. Even though she has received a clean bill of health, she is paranoid about this. Is this a major concern? She was taking a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar before her meal and this seemed to give her great relief from her symptoms. However, she was advised by someone that Apple Cider Vinegar may cause other health problems and must be stopped and she did. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
You haven't specified how many times on an average your mother experiences burping. On an average, up to 15 times maybe considered normal. However if your mother experiences more than this or has an intensity higher than this, You might have to re-evaluate her dietary habits. Some other steps would be to avoid excessive air swallowing, talking during meals, limit foods like beans, cabbage and bran etc.
The efficacy of Apple cider vinegar is not thoroughly researched yet, but a teaspoon of it before a meal, may help to an extent. An over the counter antiflatulent like Maalox may also be helpful, as also mild exercises.
Hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist your further.
Regards, Dr. Sreeja
