What Causes Excessive Mucus In The Throat After Tooth Extraction?

Hello,

I had an upper molar extracted last Friday. Perhaps a day and a half later, I have mucus in my sinus over the extraction site, and the mucus burns a lot. It also has an awful odor. It's difficult to describe the flavor, but it is more like what rotten clams might smell like. After (5) 500mg amoxicillin capsules, I had thought it would start to get better, but I had a bad attack of this today.

Any suggestion on what it might be or more importantly, what to do about it?

Thank you!

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain that during extraction of the upper molar tooth there has been perforation of the floor of the sinus as the roots of upper molar teeth lies in close proximity of the sinuses...
There is also a possibility that any piece of tooth has accidentally slipped into the sinus leading to infection..

In both conditions there will be infection in the sinuses along with formation of bad smelling mucous or pus..

It has to be taken into immediate consideration and you should consult an Oral Surgeon or an ENT expert and get evaluated along with x ray of the sinuses and extraction socket..

In case if the sinuses are infected due to perforation a surgical procedure to repair the sinus floor and a course of antibiotics and painkillers will help..

In case of tooth piece into the sinus removal of the same is must to prevent worsening of the condition..

As of now continue antibiotics along with decongestant nasal sprays like Xylometazoline and also do steam inhalations and saline nasal irrigations....

Hope this helps..
