What Causes Excessive Mucus Production And Ear Pain After A Tonsillectomy?

I had a tonsillectomy early Monday morning, so today will be my 4th day dealing with this. I am experiencing extreme amounts of mucous and it is so bad that I can t breathe when I have all this mucous in the back of my throat. I also am having bad pain in my ears, and I can barely open my mouth. It wont open more than a few centimeters. I have been trying to eat and drink, but I absolutely can t eat. Not even Jello or pudding. I m worried I will be hospitalized soon if this doesn t get better. Also the swelling is so bad that I tried to take a liquid motrin to decrease swelling but it burns my throat so bad that I can t take it.

Hi,
Welcome to health care magic,

It could be due to upper respiratory tract infection like pharyngitis.Ear pain could be related to this infection also.

Majority of cases this infections are due to viral infection(EB virus, adenovirus) but in some cases it might be related to bacterial infection (streptococcal pharyngitis). Here,in your case it may be related to your tonsillectomy surgery but needs to checked by clinical examination.

We differentiate the cause through routine blood counts with throat examination, pharyngoscopy to rule out non infective causes.

Therefore it is advisable to see your operating ENT specialist for thoroughly clinical examination.

You might require antibiotics (to prevent super infection if cause is viral) with analgesics, antiinflammatories and steam inhalation 2 to 3 times a day.

Here, you should also take cheratussin Ac syrup as it contains Guaiphenesin which is an expectorant and helps to loosen congestion in your chest and throat, making it easier to cough out through your mouth.

You can also have warm salt water gargles which helps to get relief from throat soreness and irritation.

I hope it will clear to you now that what exact treatment is to be taken in your case.

Consult ENT specialist for further advise.

Thanks and Regards,

Dr.SandipKabra
