What Causes Excessive Salivation?

Im 57 years old, and quite healthy, but I produce a large amount of spit . A lot of times it is white, and a moderate amount of times it is a very thick white. I don t have a temperature. Sometimes I spit in the toilet upwards of a hundred times, which tremendously helps clear it out for a while. I have a moderate cough now and then, and almost always cough stuff up, and spit if out right away. Could this be a infection, even though I don t have temperature? Any ideas you may have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Tom Wold in Sacramento Ca.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Persistent production of white mucus may be due to post nasal drip. It is usually due to allergy caused by irritation of either something in the atmosphere or a particular food or drink. In some persons, the drip itself is not detected.

If it is bothersome, treatment can involve the use of different types of medicines, e.g., (1) antihistamine/decongestant combination even though you are not congested. This combination reduces mucus secretion, e.g., Benadryl D, Allegra D, Claritine D. (2) Nasal sprays such as Nasonex, Avamys, Flonase, etc. I hope this helps.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
