What Causes Excessive Sleeping In A Person With Liver Disease?

My sister has liver disease, chronses disease. She is sleeping a lot and is sluggish, she knows who we are but keeps wanting to go back to sleep. When she talks to you see looks at you then both her eyes look up and to the left? She had similar episodes of sleeping for long periods and this type of behaviour. When do we need to take her to a hospital?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Sleep disturbances, particularly daytime sleepiness and insomnia, are common problems reported by patients suffering from liver cirrhosis.

Reversal of sleep rhythm, drowsiness and lethargy are classic signs of this disease. Ascites was recently reported to be a contributing factor to the development of OSA in patients with liver cirrhosis. Shift her to the hospital immediately.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. AJEET SINGH, General & Family Physician
