What Causes Excessive Sleeping, Pale Appearance And Listlessness In Child?

My 5 year old grand-son who is normally very active, has a great appetite and never slows down is sick. We thought it just a normal stomach bug on Sunday night but he is not better. He is not throwing up but is very pale and listless. Still not eating hardly anything and yesterday a new thing developed... He has been complaining of pain in hes stomach but no more vomiting or diarrhea. He has dropped 5 lbs. and was already very thin. Now he just wants to sleep. He went to the restroom after school and his Mother found him on the floor sleeping. She picked him up and took him to a bench in the lobby (of her business). He slept for the 30 minutes before she left work. Got him home and he made it just inside the door. She was changing the baby s diaper , turned around and my grand-son was asleep on the floor just inside the front door. He wanted a hot bath so she put him in one, wanted his p.j. s, laid on the couch for a few minutes and asked her at 6:30 p.m. if he could just go to bed. He did and immediately went to sllep. This is not normal for him. I am getting more and more frightened, His birth father, died of a blood clot in the heart breaking free and blowing out his brain stem. Help!

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

In my opinion, thereis no reason to be worried and usually this is just temporary and self limiting. Excessive daytime sleepiness is common issues and should be considered in this case.

Excessive daytime sleepiness may be caused by conditions such sleep deprivation, metabolic disturbances, sleep apnoea, medications, neurological disorders such seizures and psychiatric disorders such depression.

If emotional causes are ruled out then some tests can be done to confirm the diagnosis.

In my opinion, polysomnography ( sleep study ), is one of the necessary examinations in order to achieve a correct diagnosis. Please discuss with primary care Doctor about these issues.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Iven Romic Rommstein
