What Causes Excessive Swelling In The Knees?

I hurt my knee about two months ago and was told that I had subluxation of the patella. I received a brace but ever since then my knee has been swollen. I can't afford a physical therapists and I'm afraid I have excess water on my knee. What are the risks of having water there for too long?
