What Causes Excessive Weight Loss While On Norvasc?

The cardiologist has prescribed Norvasc for my mother. She is a small woman and she s trying to get her weight up-per her doctor. Since starting this medication, and drinking ensure plus 2 times a day, she is slowly losing weight. Could this medication have anything to do with this?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Norvasc use has not been associated with a major degree of weight loss. However nausea and non-specific gastrointestinal symptoms are reported in a few. Weight loss for no obvious reason is an alarm sign especially in middle aged and elderly. I would strongly recommend to have an outpatient visit to look at a detailed history and some relevant routine workup for that.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Albana Sejdini, General & Family Physician
