What Causes Experiencing Floaters And Flashes Of Light After Having Cataract Surgery?

I underwent cataract removal surgery and insertion of lenses in both my eyes in May 2013. In the right eye on opening the bandage in the evening the same day a lot of blood stuck to the bandage and for nearly two hours blood kept on oozing in small quantity. I consulted the doctor who described it as normal and advised not to worry. Now in January 2014 I am experiencing floaters and flashes of light . I consulted an eye specialist who checked my retina after dilating my eyes . He says that my retina has become weak.( I am a diabetic and hypertensive for the last 16 years. My question is 1) is any further advanced eye examination necessary and of what kind 2) is this sign of retinal detachment 3) what should I do now ( doctor prescribed lubricating drops and Neurobin - forte tablets) 3) can I have sudden vision loss and what precautions to take.

Hello
It seems from the history that you have underwent cataract surgery following which you are having symptoms of floaters. Cataract surgery is not the cause for your floaters as you have underwent surgery 7-8 months back.
The cause for floaters is vitreous opacities and sudden onset of floaters should arouse suspicion of posterior vitreous detachment and retinal tear.
Coming to your questions, 1)you require examination of retina after dilatation by indirect ophthalmoscopy.2) It is not a sign of retinal detachment but retinal tear or hole has to be ruled out. 3) If it is retinal tear it requires prophylactic laser to prevent sudden vision loss because of retinal detachment.

Thank you
