What Causes Extreme Fatigue, Drooling And Bed Wetting In A Child?

A friends child is suffering from extreme fatigue, difficulty with breathing, swelling in the tonsils, but he is requiring to breath through the mouth, drooling, and bed wetting. He is about 7. They just moved to a new area and they are having trouble connecting with doctors. They have been to the ER 1 time, but the pediatrician is the one doing the most testing. I was at first concerned about Lyme s since they recently went on a camping trip. This issue has been going on for about 4 weeks. I suggested getting his test results together and making a trip to the nearest children s ER which is 2 hours away. I am a nurse, so they are asking me questions since they are unsure about where to turn. I do know they have tested him for Mono 2 or 3 times, which would also rule out leukemia, would it not? I am a trauma nurse in and ICU, not a pediatric nurse. I feel there is urgency to get a diagnosis. He does have a referral to an ENT but that appointment is not until Oct 3.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Since the child is having difficulty in breathing, has inflamed tonsils, drooling & breathing through the mouth. He should be urgently hospitalized, he needs medical support.

Let him get physically examined for erythema migrans rash, let the blood tests be done to rule out bacterial/ viral infections, Lyme disease or Mononucleosis.

The symptomatic treatment should be started for the child is showing symptoms of fatigue, swollen glands, headache /low-grade fever, difficulty in breathing, etc.

Neglect will result in the worsening of the symptoms & complications (lymphocytic meningitis, loss of facial muscle tone, etc).

It is good to know that you are a nurse & concerned for the child. Get the treatment started at the earliest.

If the child does not respond to oral medications you may have to use an intravenous line (for intravenous antibiotics & fluid support if needed).

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Nupur K, General & Family Physician
