Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My friend is 58 she has diabetes and congestive heart failure. I saw her today and she looks like she is pregnant. She was 175 in August and now weighs 245, she had her right leg AMPUTATED from the knee down 2 years ago. She can t get her prosthesis on because of the swelling. She s on 3 fluid pills. What could it be.
Hi & Welcome to HCM. I can understand your concern. I have gone through the history given in your query, your friend seems to be suffering from generalized edema (accumulation of fluid in the tissues) due to congestive heart failure. She needs to be evaluated properly by a cardiologist. Lab tests like CBC, fasting blood glucose level, liver and kidney function tests, echocardiography may be required to assess her condition. In addition to 'water pills' she may need drugs like angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors like Enalapril to treat her heart failure. Beside medications she should reduce the dietary salt intake, fatty and spicy foods, her blood glucose should be controlled, etc. Hope the suggestions given above would be useful to her in getting the prompt treatment. A feed back is required.
