What Causes Extreme Itchiness After Starting Buspirone?

My sister (for whom I am a caretaker) is becoming hysterical about itching symptoms. She has significant brain impairment due to a brain hemorrhage. She has been on a number of drugs for different conditions for some time but the only new drug is Buspirone. This was prescribed for EXTREME anxiety the first time about two months ago. (She was previously taking Ativan PRN but four doctors said to stop that due to her age (77) and condition.) Her anxiety seems significantly reduced until this itching started about 10 days ago. Could this drug be causing it? What OTC remedies are available to relieve the itching?

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

No, Buspirone cannot cause itching.
Her itching is mostly due to other causes like skin dryness, viral infection, allergy etc.
So better to start antihistamine like Levocetrizine or Fexofenadine.
These are easily available over the counter (OTC).
Try any of them for 1 week and if itching is still persistent then consult dermatologist.
