What Causes Extreme Tiredness After Withdrawal Of Morphine Patches?

My 98 year old mother was prescribed 2 x 15 mg morphine patches to ease pain in left leg due to circulatory problems / severe cellulitis. After about one week to ten days she became confused, had daily diarrhea, lost a lot of weight etc and the district nurse removed the patches in one go. This was around 72 hours ago. She has eaten a bit and is less confused but is extremely weak and withdrawn. Would a gradual withdrawal have been less severe on her and is she likely to progress over the next few days?
