What Causes Extreme Weight Gain In A Child?

My granddaughter is 6 years old and in the past year has gained a lot of weight, she currently weighs 90 lbs. Her tummy is very hard. She is very active...rides bikes, plays outside, runs, swings, climbs hills, hoola hoops. Her mom has changed her diet over the past year and put her on nonfat milk and lots of greens. She still seems to put on weight. Any ideas?

Anesthesiologist 's  Response
Hi,

I really appreciate your awareness of childhood obesity. With the above-given history, I can make sure that there is no family history of obesity and the kid is very active and not at all sedentary. Let me mention a few conditions to be looked into :
1) Cushing disease
2) Hypothyroidism
3) Any ovarian tumor/cyst growing into the abdomen
4) Obesity

My sincere advice is please do not make any delay in taking her to an endocrinologist. We, usually evaluate thoroughly before coming to a conclusion. So please see a competent endocrinologist. If you don't get an appointment, you can meet a pediatrician as well. I can order a battery of investigations and suggest some medications even. But clinical examination is the most important thing, especially in kids.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi.m, Anesthesiologist
