What Causes Facial Numbness On The Left Side?

I have been experiencing facial numbness on the left side of my face since a few weeks after the birth of my first child in January of this year. It started with the far left of my face and has spread to the middle and down my neck. I ve checked with a neurologist and he had me do an MRI. He said everything came back normal and said there is no diagnosis for me; that I will just have to deal with the symptom of having tingling and numbness in my face. He suggested Topamax for the symptoms, but since I was breastfeeding at the time I decided to wait until I finished that to start the medication. Then, last week the tingling and numbness spread to my tongue (making it difficult to taste anything). I contacted him and began the medicine immediately. I need some insight on this. This symptom keeps getting worse. It is affecting everything. Why would this appear all of a sudden and why won t it go away? I am 29 years old and this is driving me crazy. I can t focus on anything; I m worrying all the time. Please any help would be appreciated.

Hello
First of all I would suggest you to keep your cool. PLease relax.
Its a treatable problem.

Numbness of Hypesthesia in any part of the body suggests nerve dysfunction but can also occur due to some defects in the central nervous system.
It often goes hand in hand with paresthesias, which means a tingling sensation.
Facial numbness can develop as a result of an injury or dysfunction of branches of cranial nerve supplying the trigeminal nerve in your brain.

It is rare but Facial numbness can also be caused due to certain brain disorders.

I will suggest you some tips which might be helpful to you.

1. Tricyclic antidepressants can also be used since its function is to block nerve messages sent to brain and may help with easing out Facial numbness.
2.Antiseizure medications may also help since it alters the body's perception of pain and may reduce Facial numbness.
3. Vitamin B supplements need to be taken daily. Some times the decrease in the level of vitamin B-12 can increase the risk of Facial Numbness.
4. Also, it is recommended that the individual suffering with Facial numbness see an occupational therapist to cope with the symptoms which can affect eating or drinking. The occupational therapist may suggest different exercises which can help with Facial Numbness and help cope up with the symptoms.
5. A visit to a physical therapist might also be useful as the therapist can suggest ointments or creams to help relieve Facial Hypesthesia or Facial Numbness.

Wish you a speedy recovery

Thanks
