What Causes Facial Redness Along With Swelling Around The Eyes?

My husband is currently taking 100 mg amiodarone a day and two days ago received a sunburn from sun exposure that was not very unusual for him. He has been very red on his head (balding), face, and neck since then. Today he developed swelling around his eye almost closing it and around the cheek and the T-zone on his forehead. We gave him Claritin and later a Benadryl but it hasn t helped. He is not in any pain but looks terrible. I tried to take him to an Urgent Care clinic but all around here seem to be closed (it s Mardi Gras Day here in New Orleans!) No trouble breathing or any other symptoms. Should I take him to the emergency room or try another Benadryl?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have facial redness along with swelling around the eyes . Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like eye allergies , conjunctivitis , styes , chalazion or injuries. I would suggest you to wash your eyes with cold water several times a day , put corticosteroid eye drops in your eyes and take over the counter anti histamine like benadryl twice a day . If condition doesn't get better then consult ophthalmologist for proper diagnosis and treatment . Doctor may prescribe immunosuppressants along with anti inflammatory and antibiotics . Protect you facial sking from direct sun rays , so apply broad spectrum sunscreen.
