What Causes False Positive Test Result For Alcohol While On Thyroid Medication?
I am a 42 year old woman, currently in a treatment program for opiate addiction. I am given a random drug screen every week or so. I had never failed the test until July 5 of last year, and I didn t fail the original test but it being after a holiday they sent all drug screens for a confirmation test. That test I failed, it showed positive for alcohol consumption. Since then they do a confirmation on every test I take, again I pass the original and test positive every time for alcohol on the confirmation. I DO NOT DRINK! I take hyperthyroid medication daily, I am under weight, my last known weight was 100lbs. I m a heavy my dew and cappuccino drinker, but I do not DRINK ALCOHOL. PLEASE HELP!!!!
I can understand your concern. The thyroid medication you are taking, soft drink or coffee cannot show positive for alcohol test when you have not consumed alcohol.
However, use of mouthwash containing alcohol, some hand sanitizers, some chewing gums or some foods that contain vinegar can give false positive results for alcohol. If you are a consumer of any such product, you can stop using them and you will not test positive anymore!
I hope this information helps. Thank you for choosing HCM. Take care.
Best, Dr. Viraj Shah
