What Causes Fatigue Along And Weakness In The Legs?

yes. My brother, age 60 has had a sudden onset of fatigue followed by loss of function with his hands (his handwriting is now childlike he claims and he has started to walk with a limp (never before). Experiencing no pain anywhere. He had a history of smoking and some drinking but quit smoking over a yr. ago and alcohol is now minimal(beer mainly). He had some issues with circulation prior to this with weakness in his legs & fatigue about two yrs. ago and was operated on and found a blockage that they repaired. His recovery and recuperation went well and he was energized after that for over a yr. Now he has these symptoms and has had some testing done.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Causes of your difficulties may be neuropathy or ischemic issues. Neuropathic are seen in diabetics or injury of spine nerves.

If this is not your case then these symptoms are indicating circulatory problems in legs which are common in this age and there may be present atherosclerosis that obstructs blood vessels and causes pain and blisters to form.

You should do Doppler ultrasound of the leg or CT angiography to rule out such obstructive changes and then it can be treated properly by medications or by surgical and radiological procedures.

Also, you should have Aspirin and have elastic stockings applied, and should avoid cold environment and long walks.

In most cases, it can be managed with medications but sometimes surgery may be required in severe cases.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
