What Causes Fatigue And Excessive Day Time Sleepiness?
Hi my 84 yr old mother has been complaining of ++ fatigue--saw her GP and hemoglobin was 77. H ordered Vit B 12 and calcium and referred her to a surgeon--no other tests ordered. She has been on meds for about 10 days and now complains of very dark tarry stool. Her apptmt with surgeon is 1 month away. No blood ordered or anything. Not sure if we should go back to GP or ER. She has ongoing fatigue sleeping 12 hrs a night an napping during day-- has to rest after minimal activity--very unusual for her as always very active. thank you YYYY@YYYY
In my opinion, thereis no reason to be worried and usually this is just temporary and self limiting. Excessive daytime sleepiness is common issues and should be considered in this case.
Excessive daytime sleepiness may be caused by conditions such sleep deprivation, metabolic disturbances, sleep apnoea, medications, neurological disorders such seizures and psychiatric disorders such depression. If emotional causes are ruled out then some tests can be done to confirm the diagnosis.
In my opinion, polysomnography (sleep study), is one of the necessary examinations in order to achieve a correct diagnosis. Please discuss with primary care Doctor about these issues.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
