What Causes Fatigue And Skin Peeling From Finger Tips While Treating Hypothyroidism?

I have been taking medication for over 25 years for hypothyroidism. Over the weekend, the skin peeled in a thin layer off of all of my fingertips. I have been very fatigued over the last 6 weeks as well. Could this possibly be related to my throid issue.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You have history of suffering from hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism does cause fatigue, skin rashes and other side effects. Dry skin and peeling of the skin of the fingers may be related to thyroid problems or side effects of medicines being taken. You are suggested to take care of your fingers and palm, avoid touching harsh detergents, body lotions or beauty products containing chemical ingredients.

Apply calamine lotion on the area affected and avoid doing work other than paper work for a couple of days. Avoid cooking, cutting, gardening, driving, or any other heavy work. Get clinically examined by a dermatologist to evaluate the factor causing the peeling like fungal infection, psoriasis, hand eczema, allergies, etc. Sometimes, vitamin A toxicity or Niacin deficiency also causes such symptoms. Get assessed and treated at the earliest.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
