Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Fatigue And Sleepiness After Taking Glucosamine?
I have arthritis in my joints and especially my knees. I had one knee replacement almost 10 years ago and it has not been completely successful. I recently saw a Naturopathic doctor and she prescribed Veg-Source Glucosamine Sulfate. 500 mg taking 2 in the a.m. and 2 in the p.m. I have an allergy to sulfates so I am now wondering about this supplement. I never took Glucosamine before because of shellfish allergy but she assured me that this is a vegetarian product not containing any shellfish. I find that I become very tired and sleepy every afternoon and wonder if this is the cause?
Glucosamine has side effects like nausea, heartburn, fatigue, tiredness & skin irritation. If you are diabetic glucosamine may increase your blood sugar levels.
Glucosamine thins the blood so it should be used cautiously. Pharmacists & doctors do not prescribe warfarin with glucosamine.
Glucosamine interacts with alcohol or grape juice. Keep your treating doctor informed about all the medications you are taking.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
