What Causes Feeling Of Internal Itching In Head And Face?

My father is 61 and 6-7 weeks ago he started having what he calls internal itching in his head and face. There is no rash and nothing visible externally to show an obvious cause. He feels hot at times when it s not warm and so uncomfortably itchy that he ll make his face red from scratching. It s only the head and face and he swears it is an internal itch not just skin irritation. He had been on a lot of psych meds for anxiety, depression, ect. that he stopped taking around the same time frame which could be the cause but no one seems to have any answers as to what exactly the problem is and what he can do to stop it or even ease it.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The symptoms seem to be related to side effects of the antidepressants. These medications can elevate levels of serotonin in the skin. I suggest using antihistamines such as Cetirizine to relieve the itching.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
