What Causes Feeling Of Obstruction While Swallowing?

Every time I eat something I feel an obstruction when I swallow the food. I have to drink a lot of liquid and then I feel the food, very slowly, going down. Other times, it seems to get stuck half way down. I had a procedure done on my esophagus about 11 years ago when I had almost the same problem. They inserted something that looked like a ballon and filled it with air to open the esophagus. Is this a sign of esophageal cancer?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

It could be a structure (narrowing) of the esophagus.
Cancer does not present with these symptoms.
Consult a gastroenterologist and get the evaluation done.
A CT scan and Barium swallow is required to make a diagnosis.
Once the diagnosis is confirmed, you might require serial esophagal dilations to relieve the spasms and obstruction.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
