Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My son 21 mths fell and hit his face on the sidewalk 2 days ago, he has a cut on his nose and his nose and upper lip are swollen and there were blood on my husbands shirt when they came back home, not sure if from his nose or mouth but bleeding had stopped by that time. We took him to the ER but he looked fine, playful and was cleared after a few hours with a recommendation to observe him for the next 48 hours. He started with mild fever yesterday afternoon and 39 - 39.1°C during the night. The fever dropped to 37.5 after giving him paracetamol. Other than that he looks fine, just a bit more tired than usual. Is the fever related to the head injury and should I take him back to the ER?
Hello and welcome to HCM, The fall has caused facial injury which is clearly visible on face. The injuries on the face (nose and lips) should be properly dressed to prevent any further bleeding. Associated fever may be due to superimposed infection. The anti-pyretic (paracetamol) has controlled the fever but the child needs to be monitored for recurrence of fever, drowsiness or lethargy. It will be good to rule out head injury since signs and symptoms of any disease or disorder are limited in an infant and toddler. Thus, you can consult your referring doctor or pediatrician for clinical assessment, investigations and thus management.
