What Causes Fever Along With Thigh And Abdominal Pain During Menstruation?

Hello, I m 31 and my periods are pretty regular, I do get cramps but about once a year I get the worst pain! So this morning I started to get a bit of pain which turned into a really bad fever with horrendous pain in my thighs! I had the bedroom window wide open and the fan on and an ice cold flannel I had abdominal cramps! The pain was unbareable. This feeling was constant for about 20 minutes then it started to come and go in waves which offered a tiny bit of relief. The ordeal lasted about 45 mins. I was writhing around in agony! I ve had this happen to me 4 times now and I m worried it stems from an underlying problem. The doctor thinks it s the way my body reacts to a virus? But I m fine now. Thanks, Laura

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The pain in relation to menstruation with high grade fever indicates possible pelvic inflammatory condition through some sort of bacteria most likely. My guidelines at present:
- Drink more liquids to maintain hydration
- Take utmost care for vaginal hygiene
- Do not use public washrooms
- Avoid prolong use of same tampon
- Wipe the vagina from front to back after washroom use (rather than back to front)
- Avoid intercourse (if active)
- Discuss the need of prescription of antibiotic as azithromycin, metronidazole or others with your primary care
- Use of acetaminophen 3-4 times a day for fever relief

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
