What Causes Fever And Sore Throat?

My daughter has a fever and a very sore throat. When I look in her mouth I see a white spot in the back of her throat. Does that signify strep throat or is that a myth? I know she has a virus and sore throats and we may take her in tomorrow pending your answer. Tom
