What Causes Fever, Chills And Breathlessness While On Medication For Strep Throat?

My son, age 26, is on antibiotic for strep throat. He now has a fever of 100.3 Last night it was 102. Tonight he is chilling and having problems getting deep breaths. How concerned should we be? Emergency room tonight, urgent care tomorrow or just wait?

Hello,

Infections that cause strep throat typically cause high fever and chills. This is expected to occur and shouldn't worry you too much. Breathing problems are not supposed to occur though. If your son feels like he's not getting enough oxygen or his breath is "noisy" (stridor) then he should be examined at once. Sometimes the tonsils may become so swollen that they may partially obstruct the airways. This is not very common. Another uncommon complication is the formation of an abscess which may cause partial airway obstruction as well.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
