Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello, My 26 year old son had his spleen removed approx.nine years ago. He ingested a lot of sugary foods yesterday and he just called me due to being very ill this morning with diarrhea, vomiting, chills, and a slight fever. He asked me for advice on what to do for these symptoms. My immediate thought was that he was describing classic flu symptoms. Afterward, I started to think that the things that he ingested yesterday might be related to him not having a spleen. He does take a daily multivitamin daily. I would really appreciate it if you could give me some feedback concerning this situation. Thank you.
I feel your son's symptoms might be attributed to ? viral gastroenteritis. It is usually self limiting and he should feel better in a day or two.
I would suggest a paracetamol/tylenol to help reduce the fever and chills.
ORS/oral rehydration solution might help. Bread toast, apples , rice gruel with salt to taste, tender coconut water etc are part of a good diet , when one has gastroenteritis.
Probiotics like lactobacilli will also help.
In case symptoms don't get better by 48 hrs, or he has persistent/continuous vomiting/diarrhoea/ high fever, he should visit a doctor at the earliest.
Regards, Dr. Divya Kuttikrishnan.
