What Causes Fever, Dizziness And Neck Pain After Taking Amoxicillin?

My 9 year old grandson is taking Amoxicillin 500 mg twice a day for 10 days... he has 5 days left. He is now running a fever and complains of being dizzy and a neck ache . Would this have anything to do with the medicine? There is a history of being allergic to penicillins in our family.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Based on the symptoms, allergy to penicillin can be the cause. Antihistamines and steroids should be given to reduce any hyper-sensitivity reaction. Any facial swelling or difficulty in swallowing / breathing can denote fatal anaphylaxis which is an emergency to be treated immediately. Continuous monitoring for next few days and treatment of fever is essential.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
