What Causes Fever, Headache, Sore Throat And Enlarged Tonsil?

Hi, my 15 yr old daughter has a fever, headache, sore throat, and very enlarged tonsil with white pus spots on it. I took her to the doctor yesterday and they did a throat culture which came back negative. She is feeling worse today. Its been 2 days. Do you think we should wait it out, or go back for another throat culture? Thanks, Lisa

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have fever, headache, sore throat and enlarged tonsil. Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like strep throat due to bacterial or viral infection , meningitis or viral pharyngitis . I would ssuggest you to consult ENT specialist again for proper examination and go for viral culture test , throat swab test along with examination with laryngoscope . Doctor may prescribe antiviral like acyclovir or antibacterial like amoxicillin along with anti inflammatory . In some cases doctor may also recommend tonsillectomy . For now do warm saline gargles several times a day , take paracetamol and ibuprofen for pain .
