What Causes Fever, Severe Sore And Red Throat?

My 11 year old is running fever with a severe sore throat. I looked at his tonsils and can't tell if he has pus, however, the back of his throat is also red. What would his tonsils look like if he were to have tonsilitis? There are no other symptoms besides these two.
