What Causes Fever, Weakness And Exhaustion?

My 70 year old husband has a fever and is extremely weak. The fever spiked at 103 and has since dropped to 102. He is having a hard time standing up but had been feverish and exhausted since Tuesday. His blood sugar is 169 and finished 6 days of an antibiotic for a dental problem. He is drinking fluids but hasn t been eating much. What do you suggest?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice. You have not mentioned for which dental problem is taking antibiotic. Foci of infection or inflammation has to be searched for leading fever. For that, following physical examination are to be done:

1. Liver, Spleen palpation

2. Lymph node palpation

3. Auscultation

4. Abdominal tenderness -CBC -PS examination -ESR-Auscultation

According to examination further specific investigation can be planned If no specific organic cause is found. Then it is from viral infection. According to cause, specific treatment will be given.

Meanwhile for fever simple paracetamol like over the counter drug can be taken. Keeping this in mind consult a physician for examination.
