What Causes Fever With Pelvic And Abdominal Pain Post Vaginal Hysterectomy?

I had a vaginal hysterectomy leaving only the ovaries. Two weeks into recovery I began a slight fever, smell and severe pelvic and abdominal pain. Dr is treating as vaginal cuff infection with Flagyl 500 mg twice daily. Now 4 days into the 7 prescribed, the pain is still there. Other symptoms are gone. When I rest I feel good. If I get up and walk around it feels painful. Lots of pressure from upper abdomen to shooting pains in the lower pelvis. It appears I m still swollen too. Should I be concerned or is this normal? I should mention that I ve been taking a daily stool softener since the surgery but haven t had any troubles in that regard.

Hello,

Welcome to health care magic.

I have read your question completely and understand your concerns.

You had a vaginal hysterectomy only 2 weeks back. It is a major surgical procedure. You also currently have a vaginal infection for which you are being treated. The pain and the pressure like symptoms that are you experiencing is due to the surgery that you underwent. During surgery there is a fair bit of cutting, pulling and suturing of your pelvic organs. Your subsequent vaginal infection is a bit of a setback to the recovery process too. So your recovery will take time. While there are women who recover quickly, there is a fair percentage of women who recover by 4-6 weeks.

I would advise you to take things a bit slow. You can do routine activities but nothing strenuous for next few weeks. Take simple pain killers like paracetamol and Ibuprofen for the pain( provided you are not allergic to them).

I guess you would be having a 6 week post surgical review with your gynaecologist. You could then go over your problems with her again if you have not recovered by then.

I hope this answer has helped you.
Thank you
