I have been struggling with a very bad odor within a week following my period, almost like a rotting smell. After about a week, the rotting smell disappears, and I have an orange discharge that accompanies a fishy smell, I have gone to the Dr. for my annual exam, and was tested for STDs and had none. My Dr. told me these odors are normal as is the discharge, but I have never had this before. It is very embarrassing when I have sex with my boyfriend, and I feel very dirty. Help!
Hi, Welcome to Healthcare magic. I am Dr Ramadevi Wani. I will be answering your concerns.
Normal vaginal discharge does not have odor. It is clear from your notes that you have infection. You most probably have Bacterial vaginosis. Bacterial vaginosis is caused by imbalance in the amount of bacteria in the vagina. This infection usually causes grayish discharge with strong odor particularly after intercourse. Sometimes it can be orange. It is not associated with itching or burning.
Trichomoniasis a sexually transmitted disease that can cause orange coloured discharge with foul smell. It is associated with itching, soreness and pain while passing urine. Since you say that you were tested for STDs and were negative for them, in all probability you have bacterial vaginosis
Please consult another doctor for internal examination. The doctor may treat you based on clinical examination or may take a vaginal swab for testing the organism. You need to get your Pap smear done if it is due. I hope this is helpful. If you have further concerns, I will be happy to answer. Best wishes, Dr Rama
