What Causes Flare Up Of Acne On Face Upon Withdrawal From Alcohol?

Hi there,
I am in my late 40s and have been using alcohol excessively for many years. I have always had mild acne despite drinking lots of water and eating mainly whole fresh foods. However I started abstaining from alcohol altogether a few days ago and my acne on my face has really flared up and become unsightly, particularly on my cheeks where I don't usually get it. Appreciate your advice please?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain Acne can occur in individuals with who are heavy drinkers while flaring up of Acne after alcohol withdrawal seems to be due due to hormonal fluctuations that might have occurred after alcohol withdrawal..
Nothing to worry as gradually the body will adapt to the changes the symptoms will improve..
As of now you can start applying Clindamycin and Benzoyl Peroxide gel over pimples..
Use mild facewash containing Salicylic acid to wash your face..
You can also apply Benzoyl Peroxide cleansers..
Apply Adapelene gel at night..
Wash your face with cold water..
Take Multivitamin supplements..
Avoid oily food..
Maintain a good Facial hygiene..
You can also consult a Dermatologist if symptoms does not improve in 15 days and can be advised Oral antibiotics and retinoid..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.

Hi Dear,

Understanding your concern.

As per your query you have symptoms of flare up of acne on face upon withdrawal from alcohol is due to hormonal change and due to increased skin susceptibility of getting infected. Need not to worry. I would suggest you to exfoliate your skin gently once or twice a day with a salicylic acid-based exfoliant. Apply benzoyl peroxide cream or gel for killing the bacteria in the pore . Wash your face using a mild soap or cleanser and lukewarm water. You should consult dermatologist for proper diagnosis. Doctor may prescribe oral antibiotics like clindamycin , Isotretinoin or Hormonal Therapy.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
