What Causes Fluctuating TSH Levels?

My TSH always seems to fluctuate it will be .12 uUi/ML in one test and 6.8 in another. It seems like we can never get it to remain stable. And in both cases my FreeT4 is in a normal range. Is there anything else we should be looking at? Are there any tests to make sure my pituitary is functioning normally?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Your fluctuating TSH in both the tests is higher than the range and this means Hypothyroidism. Your fT4 is in a normal range and in this circumstances,you may have Subclinical Hypothyroidism.But to confirm the diagnosis it is necessary to do even the Ft3 tets. The most common cause of Hypothyroidism is Hashimoto's thyroiditis and the anti TPO test will clarifie the diagnosis. So to resume,if you were my patient i will ask you to do the fT3 test and the TPO antibodies. These test will give all the necessary information if your thyroid is functionin properly and what is the cause of your thyroid disorder. In my opinion you don't have a pituitary problem.The fluctuating TSH is the result of your thyroid disorder.
