What Causes Fluid Accumulation Under The Skin At Pierced Site?

I have recently had my surface piercings removed from my collar bones, whilst I still had the piercings I noticed a build up of fluid under my collar bone I was advised to remove the piercing and it would release the fluid. As I removed it yes some fluid did come out of the piercing but three days after and a lot of squeezing of the bubble the lump is still there along with the fluid, what is this fluid under my skin?

Hi,

I have reviewed your question and it seems to me that you are mostly concerned with the fact that there is still a fluid build-up in the former piercing area.If the fluid is clear or slightly milky and runny. It is most likely lymphatic fluid that stems from the piercing injuring a lymph vessel in the area.

This vessel will not heal right after the piercing is removed. My experience with similar cases has been that it takes weeks or several months before the fluid does no longer accumulate in the area and the lymph vessels heal. I advise my patients not to squeeze an area like that because it could lead to infection. It is also advisable to cover any open wounds with a clean bandage to prevent infection.

You will recognize an infection if the area becomes red, warm and/or painful and the fluid becomes white/yellowish and smelly. In this case you need to see your physician to prescribe you an antibiotic.

Hope I have answered your question. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.

Regards,
Dr. Christine Sauer
