What Causes Fluid Around The Lung Area Post Open Heart Surgery?

Good morning Dr Rynne, A dear friend of mine is approximately 7/10 days post open heart bypass. She has reached out to me to ask why she has fluid on her lungs . She also says her lungs are clear. Q, from me, is it possible its fluid around the heart and not in lung area? Also she says no chest pain. Any help will be appreciated. Art G.

Hi,

Fluid around lungs area is edema caused due to open heart surgery. Its normal to have edema around the area of surgery for sometime. Gradually it will reduce. In this case heart surgery is done so it takes little time to clear out all the fluid as the heart takes time to get back to proper action. So tell her not to get worried. Use respirometer and expand her chest so that she doesn't get breathing difficulty.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
