What Causes Fluid Around The Lungs?

My brother had quadruple bypass surgery on Nov 9. He was in ICU until the 17th or 18th then was put in a room. He was having a lot of fluid around his lungs. He was to come home today. Yesterday his white blood count was 19. They checked it today and it was double what it was yesterday. What could be the problem

Hi,

Elevated white cell count is usually indicative of an infection. There may be an infection brewing that needs to be treated.

They would likely screen him for infection with blood tests, urine tests and imaging to try and locate the exact source.
