What Causes Fluid In Lungs And Swollen Ankles?

If my aunt has fluid in both lungs and swollen ankles and feet and diagnosed with congestive heart failure , what stage of the disease is she in? She is 86 years old , in the hospital , and has recently had pneumonia. She is frail, but seems determined to get better. What is her prognosis?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Congestive heart failure with associated infection like pneumonia in an elderly lady seems to have poor prognosis.
However, infection needs to treated aggressively. If it responds well with treatment, her lungs would be back to normal. Similarly, cardiac activity needs normalisation by administration of cardiotonic drugs. Excess fluid accumulated in tissues needs to be driven out by means of diuretic treatment.
Once these parameters and organs function back to normal, completete recovery is possible.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
