What Causes Fluid On Brain And Bloating?

my mother has is 87 and is hospitalised and has been told she has fluid on the brain, not sure of the name ??? how life threatening is this in a person this age and she is very bloated with fluid, could she have fluid around her heart as well ? legs are very swollen
