What Causes Fluid Retention While On Metoprolol?

I am looking at the difference in taking 25 mg metoprolol for my atrial fib and dilt-xr 180 mg. I changed from metoprolol because I felt I did not have much energy, but on the dilt-xr I feel I am retaining fluid - not pitting edema. My BP is fine has always been 110-120 and diastolic in 70s. I cannot loose weight no matter how hard I try since being on these drugs. Though I did have to go off my hormones when I started having atrial fib.

Hello,

Your symptoms could be related to increased fluid retention or weight gain, which is a common adverse effect related to diltiazem.

But unfortunately there are not many treatment options in this clinical situation. So, it is up to you to decide, which drug you tolerate better.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Ilir Sharka, Cardiologist
