What Causes Focal Encephalomalacia?

Several years ago I was diagnosed with Focal encephalomalacia in the right middle cranial fossa and wedge-shaped encephalomalacia and hypoattenuation in the inferior frontal lobe. This was due to a very severe accident. What, in layman s terms does it mean? Thanks

Hi,

Encephalomalacia in term of layman is softening or loss of brain tissue, thus affecting the functions of that particular part of brain and sometimes even complete loss of functions of that particular brain tissue. This may be caused by stroke of brain including hemorrhage of brain, infection or inflammation of brain, trauma or injuries to brain. Hypoattenuation is usually due to impaired blood perfusion to the area, thus affecting its function and sometimes complete loss of functions.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
