Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Food Sticking In Throat While Having Hiatus Hernia And Esophageal Spasm?
I have been diagnosed with a large hiatus hernia, plus an esophageal spasm. I have had two tests and I am awaiting another. Quite often food sticks and I have to make myself vomit to get rid of it, this happens regularly. This is the only thing that eases the pain.
I understand your concern. See, hiatus hernia is a situation or disorder where the intestinal contents primarily the stomach slide through the esophageal opening of the diaphragm. It puts pressure on the lower part of esophagus and causes spasm and the feeling of food sticking to throat as you are experiencing. If the hernia is small, conservative management is advised but surgical interventions are required in large symptomatic cases.
Hope this was helpful. Regards
