What Causes Food To Go Down The Wrong Pipe Very Often?

For a number of years now when I swallow food or fluids it goes down the wrong pipe and I experience a protracted cough (even sometimes progressing to nausea and almost vomiting). This is not a frequent occurrence, but probably two-three times per week. The coughing spell can easily last 20 minutes or more. Would evaluation by an E & T physician be helpful? My family physician just tells me to eat slower. I don t think that is the problem.

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for using healthcaremagic.
Yes your guessing is right. As you are probably suffering from dysphagia(difficulty in swallowing) , there is need of evaluation by an expert.
There are chances of either some anatomical or physiological problem.
For that thorough examination of throat needed which is done by E.N.T.(Ear,nose ,throat) surgeon or called otorhinologist.
Go for consultation and find the solution. All the best.
If after that all reports come to normal, your doctor will send you to the psychiatrist for evaluation of anxiety disorder and it's treatment.
Hope I have answered your query.

Psychiatrist Dr. Gaurav Kumar's  Response
Hello, you have not mentioned your age / sex. yes , this may be associated with anxiety( GAD). you have not mentioned exacly since when have you been facing these problems. Do you have any sort of restlessness, any sort of addiction, any sort of twiching or tics , if your job is stressful / not coping up with your studies or work, are you figure concsious or not , is there any family history of psychiatric/ psychological diorders, any family stress, then probably You should consult a psychiatrist , your protracted cough and vomiting would be cured. If there would have been any ENT ( Ear, nose , throat) problem then you would have been experiencing it very frequently ( almost every time you eat or drink) According to history what you have provided ENT consultation is not supposed to be helpful but visit a psychiatrist. any queries would be welcomed. You may try some relaxation techniques to relax you before eating. hope this helps you
