What Causes Foot Or Leg Swelling While Recovering From Gallbladder Surgery?

Hi Dr Rynne, My husband had emergency gallbladder removal surgery last Monday evening. He is home after a total 4 days in the hospital (has type 2 diabetes, has had a triple bypass, blood pressure is good due to medication, and had pneumonia in Jan) and seems to be recuperating fine. His feet and legs do swell from time to time, his job requires 7 or so hrs of standing (he wears support hose) and when he sits too long (mainly at the computer!). When he went into the hospital his legs and feet were actually thin looking. Now he has swelling a little in the legs but a lot in his feet. Is this normal? Thank you!!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It seems your husband develops swelling while standing for long time. It means its not related to gall bladder surgery. It could be due to insufficient pumping of blood back to heart due to some reason of heart. It also could be due to venous insufficiency where blood is not pumped back to the heart properly.

Another reason could be a kidney problem which causes water retention. There are other causes also like a block in the lymphatics(fluid which is collected in the tissue which later drains into veins and finally reach heart). You would need to visit a surgical specialist and a physician and undergo various tests to arrive at the final diagnosis.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Anoop Kumar, General & Family Physician
