What Causes Foot Paresthesia With Mild Pain?

My left foot feels like it is asleep whenever I sit down and put my feet up. When I get up and walk on it the sleep feeling goes away but then the outside of my foot hurts. It is a mild pain but is bothering me. Can you possible tell what this might be.
