What Causes Frequent Black Outs?

my son is 34 with history of mental health issues , lately he has been experiencing blackouts or losing time . He does thing he does not remember and has even driven across town and does not know how he got there. We are not letting him drive anymore , he has also walked away from home twice and not remembered it
